Mixing dynamics at river confluences governed by intermodal behaviour

چکیده
Abstract The extent to which flows mix at confluences is pivotal for determining spatial patterns of water quality and biodiversity. Because mixing processes are complex, predicting rates characteristic scales difficult. Here we introduce a theory confluence dynamics shallow in the process controlled by switching between two modes behaviour—one similar wake behind an obstacle other layer parallel flows. Dye visualizations field-based experiments agree with theoretical predictions support transitional behaviour modes. According our framework, interface can grow rapidly mode, when large vortices shed from zone stagnant flow within confluence, but lateral shear incoming negligible. This rapid growth occurs even though curvature shallowness inhibit through advective turbulent exchange momentum bed friction. Our findings provide insight into importance different modalities structure controlling river confluences, thereby contributing practical knowledge on role dispersal contaminants systems.

Introduction: river confluences, tributaries and the fluvial network
That river systems are networks consisting of links and nodes is one of their most obvious characteristics. Despite the ubiquity of confluences and tributary networks, the first century of modern fluvial geomorphology paid little consistent attention to river junctions and the interactions between tributaries and the main stem (Kennedy, 1984). Important exceptions include classic contributions ...

Four Wave Mixing using Intermodal Nonlinearities PhD thesis
The nonlinear process of four-wave mixing (FWM) enables coupling of energy between wavelengths. This is useful for both optical amplification and wavelength conversion. A crucial prerequisite for the process is phase matching. This PhD project investigates how higher order modes (HOMs) in fibers can be used as an additional degree of freedom to fulfill this phase matching requirement. The desig...
متن کاملAre Eyewall Replacement Cycles Governed Largely by Axisymmetric Balance Dynamics?
The authors question the widely held view that radial contraction of a secondary eyewall during an eyewall replacement cycle is well understood and governed largely by the classical theory of axisymmetric balance dynamics. The investigation is based on a comparison of the secondary circulation and derived tangential wind tendency between a full-physics simulation and the Sawyer–Eliassen balance...
متن کاملSpin-current emission governed by nonlinear spin dynamics
Coupling between conduction electrons and localized magnetization is responsible for a variety of phenomena in spintronic devices. This coupling enables to generate spin currents from dynamical magnetization. Due to the nonlinearity of magnetization dynamics, the spin-current emission through the dynamical spin-exchange coupling offers a route for nonlinear generation of spin currents. Here, we...
